Sure, graduation is the ultimate goal in high school. But while you’re here? Take your time to enjoy yourself with a great community and engaging classes. At the School for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET High), a tuition-free 9th-12th grade high school in San Diego, we take academics seriously but we also know how to have fun on both the right AND left sides of the brain. Case in point? Our elective offerings for Spring 2024.
School That Makes Sense
Our California Distinguished School is a place where teachers want to teach and students want to learn. How do we do this? We use a simple formula: make learning engaging! We believe passion fuels learning so we take your interests and make exciting classes. Win-win. Why two wins? Because believe it or not, teachers can get bored too! But not at SET High. Here, they get to intentionally design classes. They (and you) also have the benefit of block scheduling which means you can dig into fun projects and not be distracted by the bell. Even better, teachers personalize your education so you grow and learn to your full potential. We nurture imaginations, encourage big questions, and promote risk-taking in a safe and supportive school.
Electric Electives
Twenty-two electives to choose from– so many good classes. Should we make the school day longer? Here are some highlights…and some alternatives just in case. Designing your own learning journey has never been so fun!
Into the Darkness: All Things Poe: An English elective focusing on the dark, macabre works of Edgar Allan Poe. Bored in English? Nevermore.
Consider also: Psychology, The Wisdom of Star Wars
Drawing 1 & 2: Learn to draw using the Elements of Art and applying the Principles of Design(art). This is a project-intensive class that also incorporates literacy into the curriculum. Bonus? These courses also meet the college entrance Visual/Performing Arts requirement for the University of California and CSU!
In the same creative family: Digital Art, Making Movies (film, edit, direct AND produce), Computer Science, Into the Darkness, Project You!
Robotics/Building Cool Stuff or their twin, Engineering Design & Construction: These classes are very hands-on; project-based learning at its best! Learn engineering disciplines such as:
- electrical/mechanical engineering systems
- aerospace systems
- material sciences.
Identify electronic circuitry components and solder and assemble functioning circuitry. Work with electrical components, microcontrollers, hydraulic devices, laser engravers, and hand tools. We’ll give you one guess as to which class students design robot components and present their designs with the class…
Consider also: Project You!, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering
Guitar: taught by an accomplished and successful local musician who personalizes his instruction to help students of all musical abilities discover and hone their love for music. Mr. Maldonado lets you pick a song that you want to play and he finds a way for you to learn it either by helping you find the tabs or by writing a version for you that is at your level of ability. Take it once or all four years at SET High!
For more hand-eye coordination: Engineering Design and Construction, Robotics/Building Cool Stuff, Drawing 1 & 2
Smart pairing: Personal Finance for when you’re famous and want to be smart about all that dough you’re rolling in.
Jiu Jitsu: a PE elective focusing on the fundamentals of the close-contact martial art, Jiu Jitsu.
Consider also: Strength of Mind and Body, Personal Finance, Leadership SET Style
The Wisdom of Star Wars: Movies, literature, lightsabers, cosplay, and wisdom! Sharpen and integrate the wisdoms, disciplines, philosophies, and maxims from the Star Wars universe into everyday life we do. In addition, students learn to meditate, build their own lightsabers, and, if inspired, cosplay!
Consider also you will: Psychology, Jiu Jitsu, Aerospace Engineering, Strength of Mind and Body
Leadership SET Style…and/or Project You!:
Who are you? What do you want from life? Learn leadership fundamentals and understand how emotional intelligence and core principles like belonging are so important.
Project You! concentrates on Passion Projects, where students apply their weekly learnings to a topic that personally resonates with them.
Other ways to focus on you: Associated Student Body (ASB), Personal Finance, Support, Strength of Mind and Body, The Wisdom of Star Wars
Spanish 1 & Spanish 2: Yes, students are introduced to learning Spanish, but the class takes the time to learn useful phrases and practical vocabulary as well. We also focus on the fascinating culture and geography of Latin America and Spain.
For the culturally cultivated also consider: Jiu Jitsu, Drawing, and of course The Wisdom of Star Wars
