The Importance of Being Seen

The Importance of Being Seen

Here at the School for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET High), high school students, staff, and teachers collaborate and connect in a safe environment. We embrace authenticity and brilliance for an intensely personal education at our tuition-free alternative high school. To further celebrate how everyone here belongs and connects, we implemented CoreTV. Let us explain.

To See and Be Seen

When we are seen, we feel valued. When we practice seeing others for who they are without comparison or judgment, we provide safe space and energy for each other as well. Even better, when we see each other’s victories, large or small, we can celebrate each other. Our principal, Dr. Neil McCurdy, had a vision – a wall of monitors showcasing rotating images of the people of SET High to reinforce our growing emotional connection as a collaborative community. We’re calling it CoreTV.

Community & Connection

CoreTV works. Neil posted photos of the track team at their last meet – students shared generous kudos for their schoolmates. He added a message of “Congratulations” to a photo of a student who won an Eagle Scout award. Now the student is beaming with pride after a school-wide flood of support. And of course, when Neil shared a photo of a SET High teacher’s new born baby, the students gushed. Now it’s not all too uncommon for a group of students to spend free time hanging out by CoreTV to watch the rotating good news.

Affirmations and Information

To further connect the faces of SET High with the positive vibes and authentic spirit of our school, messages with affirmations and mottos rotate between the photos on CoreTV. Some of our favorites are, “This we believe…” and “No place for hate.” In addition to inspirational messaging, everyone can look to CoreTV for important information, announcements, and reminders.

SET High CoreTV in the school lobby displays important information and photos of students. Dare We Measure Happiness

Neil hopes and predicts that CoreTV will help improve the happiness metric of the students at SET High. Can we measure such a thing? Perhaps not, but we can measure our school success in the compassionate citizens, motivational leaders, and passionate thinkers we deliver to the world. Stay tuned for updates… Neil’s gears are always turning, and plans to upgrade CoreTV in the near future.

Passion fuels learning. When students feel they belong, they are more comfortable diving deep to discover, engage, and share their inner talents and drive. We have the honor of supporting and celebrating our students’ growth  from there. The goal with Core TV is that students will embrace emotional connection as a collaborative community on their individual learning journey.

Do you feel seen? We continue to seek the next generation of makers, business leaders, innovators, thinkers, and dream chasers to adopt our mindSET for success. Schedule a shadow day to see that you belong here. Or better yet, enroll for free in grades 9-12 today!
