What Really Matters in High School

What Really Matters in High School

What is high school success? Perhaps academic achievement, college-ready, and impressive resume come to mind. While we agree those goals are important, consider these qualities in a high school: safety, student-teacher relationships, student camaraderie, and a strong sense of belonging.

Welcome to the School for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET High). Yes, we are a WASC-Accredited, free public high school in San Diego. We just so happen to be a California Distinguished School as well, partially recognized for our close-knit community.

High Schoolers Seek Strong Sense of Belonging

Let’s acknowledge the mental health crisis growing across the nation. Studies show that less than 50% of American high school students feel a sense of belonging in their school, and over 25% report being a victim of bullying. After the George Floyd incident and the pandemic, mental health concerns escalated. Now more than ever students seek connection and belonging.

The Benefits of Private School Without the Pricetag

At SET High we feel passionately that our school is a safe place for our students to challenge themselves academically while they find themselves and connect with their fellow campus mates. Due to our campus culture of compassion and collaboration, and a 12:1 student to teacher ratio, students develop into their best selves…while achieving academic excellence. When students uncover their inner passion and potential, they willingly invest in their own individualized learning journey. We see that they also develop their own “SET Code” in which they build healthy camaraderie and bullying is not tolerated.

Finding Identity. Growing Connection.

SET students learn in an intellectually rigorous environment that brings out their talents and personality. We feel this helps prepare students for the next day, let alone for college or future employment and a path to a fulfilling life.

I feel like I have grown a lot since freshman year. I have found my own style and I have found the best group of friends ever. I feel like I can be who I am around them. I also have learned to not make assumptions and judge people anymore because at the end of the day we are all human and everyone is fighting their own battles. I love this growth for me.”
