To SET, With Love,

Dear SET High School,

We seniors want to share our gratitude for the incredible education we experienced. Some of us didn’t expect to love learning, bond with teachers, or grow as a human being acting as a member of society. It is apparent to us now that we are graduating this year with a bright optimistic outlook on life and a willingness to learn more, with a deeper understanding of ourselves than we could ever expect. Allow us to say thank you.

Why SET High?

Before we get too wrapped up in emotions, we should explain that the School for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET High) is not your typical high school. SET High is a WASC-accredited, tuition-free public charter high school in San Diego with a 12:1 student to teacher ratio. The unique electives, passion projects, and hands-on learning style make SET High a personal, safe, and empowering learning experience for every student.

We all agree, it’s the teachers and the freedom they have with us that made the big difference.

“The teachers actually cared and actually loved teaching.” – Samantha.

“I think the thing that amplified my love for learning was the teachers, how they taught,” – Mikel

“Teachers were always there for you.” – Jeshua

“I Am Not A Teacher But An Awakener.” – Robert Frost

The educators at SET High get to know us as students very intimately, and stretch the rigid parameters of the traditional classroom into flexible, thought-provoking, active learning experiences. We think we signed up for a standard class- later we find out we’re learning a lot about ourselves and humanity.

Ms. Geis [is my favorite teacher] because of how open, welcoming, and sometimes even overwhelmingly positive she always is. She acted as a sort of sign to me that there are still ways to be positive in the world while knowing of its problems.” – Ryan

Ms. J. is my favorite teacher because she is super genuine, loving, passionate, funny, and a lot more.“ – Eric

“Mr. Gandara when he was here and Ms. Geis, both very understanding and people you can talk to about anything.” – Miguel

“I could point out that Mr. Putaro is by far the *most* dynamic teacher. Calculus was my favorite subject because of him. I spent all my flex time in HIS class and he not only tutored me for free, but he would sometimes put away his lunch so that struggling students — such as myself — would have a chance of obtaining a higher letter. I hold his efforts close to my heart and am lucky to have witnessed it first hand. It’s egregious that many students stereotype math teachers as the most mundane.” – Ukasha

“I don’t have a favorite teacher, as that would downplay all of the others that influenced me. All teachers have impacted me in ways beyond words, such as how my writing ability was pushed by Ms. Lennon, or the kindness that Mr. Ashe bestowed upon all his students.” – Mikel

Always Growing

It’s safe to say we can’t imagine being this self aware without SET High. We understand that we are much more mature and mindful than we were our freshman year. You see us as we are. Thank you for encouraging us to continue our growth as individuals in this diverse complex world.

“I have become better at formulating sentences and expressing my needs. I love that this allows me to say what’s on my mind and become a more efficient learner.” – Zoe

“I’ve grown to be more respectful and kind to myself as well as to others.” – Miguel

“I feel like I have grown a lot since freshman year. In freshman year I wasn’t myself at all. I followed the crowd and didn’t have my own style. I hung out with people who weren’t the best influence and feel like I kinda judged people a lot. But now as a senior I have found my own style and I have found the best group of friends ever. I feel like I can be who I am around them. I also have learned to not make assumptions and judge people anymore because at the end of the day we are all human and everyone is fighting their own battles. I love this growth for me, especially my style. I feel so much more confident in my own skin now and I feel like I have more control over myself.” – Samantha

“I’ve become a lot more responsible and open to other people. I love that it’s allowed me to meet more people I consider friends, as opposed to holding a closed friend group of one or two other people tops.” – Ryan

“I will always have challenges in life, and I was able to learn that everything in life I can overcome.” – Jeshua

Thank you, SET High.
