20 Feb From Star Wars Philosophy to Real-World Skills: Electives That Ignite Passion
Imagine if young Anakin Skywalker had attended SET High. Maybe he could’ve put his anguish into boxing or creating moody love ballads on the guitar. And maybe being freed from the fear of not knowing how to balance a checkbook – and being surrounded by a supportive, non-cliche community – he would have instead focused on a passion for sustainable racing jets that he coded using R2D2’s help. Heck, we would’ve encouraged it!
Lightsabers. Boxing gloves. Guitar riffs. Financial literacy. Welcome to SET High’s spring electives, where we believe passion fuels learning. At our tuition-free 9th-12th grade high school in San Diego, you can create a personal and meaningful learning journey that’s anything but ordinary.
At our California Distinguished School, we take academics seriously but we also know how to keep learning fun and take deeper dives into unique subjects that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in a great engaging community. This semester, our incredible teachers are sharing their individual passions through electives that light them up:
Leadership SET Style challenges 9th graders through the intentional study of self, helping them create personal brands they’re proud of and introducing them to our idea of passion projects.
The Wisdom of Star Wars combines movies, literature, lightsabers, and philosophy as students cultivate wisdom through Jedi, Sith, and the Gray teachings while building their own lightsabers.
Project You! bridges the gap traditional education misses, preparing seniors for real-world success through practical knowledge, from managing finances to developing emotional intelligence. Every Friday is dedicated to passion projects where students apply their weekly learnings.
Guitar welcomes students of all abilities with accomplished local musician Mr. Riker, who personalizes instruction so everyone can learn songs they actually want to play. Students can take his class all four years, or start whenever they want.
Personal Finance is a course designed to help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earnings potential. Topics include income, money management, spending and credit, as well as saving and investing. Plus, Boxing, Computer Science, ASB, Painting, Spanish, and Digital Art round out a semester designed to ignite curiosities and inspire futures.
