High School Graduation – A Rite of Passage

SET High Principal Neil McCurdy applauds the graduating senior and teacher hugging at the 2022 graduation after a personalized speech.

High School Graduation – A Rite of Passage

Sure, high school graduation is that pivotal life event, celebrated as the certification process to a student’s adult life. At the School for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET High) we take graduation a tad more seriously than that. As a small free public high school in San Diego, our teachers and seniors know each other so personally that graduation feels more like a familial rite of passage to a student’s personal passion journey. Let us explain what we mean by that.

The SET graduation ceremony was fabulous! The Organ Pavilion was a beautiful setting, but what stood out the most was the individualized introductions and celebration of each student. I was left feeling so proud of my daughter, impressed by the accomplishments of so many students and touched by how well the teachers know these kids. It was a very special ceremony.” – Jennifer, parent of graduated senior and incoming sophomore

“Seeing the teachers give a personalized speech regarding each student was a memorable and beautiful send off to the class of 2022. It made the ceremony more meaningful for the students, teachers, and parents.” – Aureoni, parent of graduated senior

Mindset Over Motions

It all starts with an entrepreneurial mindset. We believe each of our students must own their passion to create the life they desire beyond SET. We invest significant time into our students’ personalized curriculum to help them discover and build their unique brand and opportunities.

We help each SET student identify their dreams and then we design experiential learning to enable individual greatness beyond high school. As a result, the students learn more about themselves than expected, and feel more connected to their impact on society and confident about their direction in life.

“We’ve got staff that is super committed, we’ve got students who are super committed, and we’ve got parents who are super committed, and that is really the secret sauce for a successful school,” said Dr. Neil McCurdy on NBC7 News, “SET Named California Distinguished School.”

Passionate & Personalized

As a graduating senior at SET High, our students must prepare their ROK, Reflection of Knowledge to graduate, which involves professional standards for organization, presentation, and communication skills. We believe that excellent skilled communication can heal many societal problems. Every ROK presented to us impresses us with sincerity, authenticity, and gratitude expressed by our budding future leaders.

Individuals together, SET High graduating seniors toss their caps up in the air at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, faces shining with triumphant joy“Me encanto! Ademas de no perder de vista la hermosa carita de mi hija; tambien veia de vez en cuando la cara del Dr. McCurdy , siempre con una sonrisa en su rostro disfrutando a cada uno de “sus muchachos” logrando su meta. Cada Profesor se dio tiempo de  dirigir palabras personalizadas a cada uno de los graduados. Esto habla de que en SET aman su profesion docente, y no solo enseñan a sus estudiantes, sino tambien los conocen y aprecian.” – Carolina, Madre de graduada senior.

“I loved the individual speeches by the teachers – it really brought things to life and showed the emotional connections the teachers have with their students and how each teacher has their students’ best interests at heart.” – Áine, parent of graduated senior

By graduation, we can’t simply call off names, shake hands, flip tassels, and call it a graduation. We become family. We are the elders and our high school seniors evolve into self aware entrepreneurial knowledge warriors accepting their rites to the “real world.” Each student chooses the teacher they prefer to graduate them, their guide to the direction in which they are headed.

“The Spreckels Organ Pavilion was a great choice for the venue. The graduation was simple and very personal for each student. I do like the way that each student was graduated by their choice of teacher.” – Kathrina, parent of graduated senior.

Our SET High students persevered through personal challenges to achieve that crucial high school diploma. Not everyone does. As Dr. Neil McCurdy states during the graduation ceremony, “The privilege is that I see the miracle of resilience and the daily incredible acts of courage that to others might just look like normalcy and daily living.”

We are confident in our investment in our students’ personalized education within our small tuition-free public high school. Our graduating students earned their pathway towards being great citizens, leaders, and thinkers who will deliver astounding societal results over a lifetime.
