19 Jul State Test Scores – Do They Matter?
When choosing your next school, what factors are most important? Here at the School for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET High), we understand that top ranking test scores matter, yet we suggest you consider additional criteria – this coming from a tuition-free public school for grades 9-12 that is beating the California state averages in Math and English.
Criteria to Consider in School of Choice
Before we celebrate our CAASPP test results, it’s important to highlight criteria often overlooked when considering what high school to attend, yet can make or break a student’s success.
- Campus Culture – do students feel like they belong? School doesn’t have to be stressful.
- Flexibility – does the schedule allow for thorough learning in each subject?
- Low Student to Teacher ratio – will students get personalized instruction and counseling?
- Talented Teachers – are the teachers skilled in their subject and sharing their passions?
- Fair Opportunities – are students offered advanced opportunities to boost their potential?
- Accolades for Awesomeness – in addition to WASC-accreditation, has the school earned other awards, such as California Distinguished School?
- Thoughtful – beyond test scores, are students learning, thinking, growing, and evolving?
- Identity Deep Dive – do students learn about their own passions and align studies with their interests?
How Important is English For High School Students?
All of the above stated, our CAASPP test scores are nothing to hide. We’re proud to announce that SET High is up 20 points from the previous year in English, bringing us from 40% to 60%! This is exciting news since communication skills are a top determination factor for higher education, career opportunities, and nearly any other life pursuit. This matches our graduating senior’s acceptance rate into highly competitive universities, such as UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, and UCSC, to name a few.
STEM on the Rise
The SET High Mathematics scores continue to rise post-COVID, now at 35%, and we are testing above state average (33%). Ideally, we’d like to take top scores in this area yet we acknowledge that we are scoring higher than most. Students looking to get ahead in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) have the flexibility to take advanced courses like pre-Calculus and Calculus at SET High and college courses at Mesa College. Opportunities, experiences, and lifelong learning matter even more than test scores, in our book.
We are proud to successfully develop the next generation of leaders and changemakers while consistently improving year over year.
